The Gliwice Chamber Orchestra was founded in early May 2000 to mark the 750th anniversary of the city of Gliwice. The initiative was spearheaded by Professor Jan Ballarin – then director of the State Music School (levels I and II) in Gliwice – along with violinist and manager Waldemar Staniczek, conductor Andrzej Rosół, and representatives of the local municipal authorities. The inaugural concert took place on May 27, 2000, at the Church of All Saints in Gliwice.
The orchestra is composed of musicians from Gliwice and the Silesia region who are actively engaged with various prominent artistic institutions, including Sinfonia Varsovia, the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR) in Katowice, the Silesian Philharmonic, the AUKSO Chamber Orchestra of the City of Tychy, Sinfonietta Cracovia, the Opole Philharmonic, and many others.
This unique assembly of distinguished and experienced musicians has resulted in a highly proficient and mature ensemble, which reached a high level of artistic excellence in a remarkably short period.
Throughout its concert career to date, the Gliwice Chamber Orchestra has presented a diverse range of programs—spanning from the Baroque era to the present day – most frequently performing in the churches of Gliwice and at the St. John Paul II Educational Center, the Silesian University of Technology, the Gliwice Musical Theatre (currently the Municipal Theatre), the “Bajka” stage at the Amok Cinema, the ruins of the Victoria Theatre, the Bojków stage, and the new concert hall of the L. The Gliwice Chamber Orchestra performs primarily in Gliwice, presenting concerts as part of various series with diverse repertoires – such as “Master Interpretations” (Mistrzowskie Interpretacje), “Young Artists’ Stage” (Estrada Młodych), “Musica Sacra,” and “Farewell to Summer” (Na pożegnanie lata)—in addition to performing at special, one-off events.
Between 2000 and 2010, the orchestra operated under the patronage of the Gliwice Music Society – established in 2001 and based at the L. Różycki State Music School (primary and secondary levels) in Gliwice – while simultaneously contributing to the promotion of young artists and enriching the city’s cultural landscape. In 2011, the Gliwice Chamber Orchestra Foundation was established; it currently supports the orchestra’s activities in collaboration with the WENA Artistic Agency. In 2015, marking its 15th anniversary of artistic activity, the Gliwice Chamber Orchestra Foundation (Fundacja Gliwickiej Orkiestry Kameralnej) was honored with the Mayor of Gliwice Award for achievements in the field of promoting culture. In 2016, the salon music ensemble “ELEGANZA” was formed, drawing its members from the Gliwice Chamber Orchestra; the group performs regularly in Gliwice, as well as on various stages throughout the Silesian region and across Poland. In 2020, as part of its 20th-anniversary celebrations, the ensemble held an online concert at the Jerzy Harald Concert Studio of Polish Radio Katowice, supported by the National Centre for Culture’s “Culture Online” (“Kultura w sieci”) program. With the backing of STOART, a commemorative CD was subsequently released in 2021. In 2025, on the occasion of the Gliwice Chamber Orchestra’s 25th anniversary, the Gliwice Chamber Orchestra Foundation received the Mayor of Gliwice Award for its overall body of work in the category of “Promoting Culture.”
